Challenging decision to not hire someone

I think the most challenging decisions are the ones that affect other people. I had to say no to a person who wanted to join my team as a senior engineer.

He took several tasks to check if he is up to the challenge. It was especially important because he was changing tracks. I supported him and helped him to get through by answering questions and providing guidance. He was a great communicator and we established a great relationship. Unfortunately, the amount of guidance I had to provide to him and the speed of his execution would not allow him to succeed in my team. I had conversations with my manager and several peers to see whether they see otherwise. They agreed with me.

I communicated to him my decision and the reasons behind it. It was a hard but important conversion and I’m happy he understood my position.
